Fighting climate change diminishes threat and creates economic opportunity

It may seem like a distant problem, but the scientific evidence tells us that climate change will have a big impact here in South Carolina. The good news is that there is still time to stop climate change. Solving this problem will not only result in clean air and energy independence for America, but promises new opportunities for South Carolina agriculture and business.

The price we pay for climate change

The Coast and Tourism

The booming tourist industry in our coastal communities brings billions of dollars to our state.

Yet this economic engine and natural treasure is threatened by global climate change. Studies show climate change will bring significant ocean rise and beach erosion in South Carolina.

South Carolina Wildlife

A hotter climate means warmer rivers and streams in South Carolina. Even slight increases in temperature can cause a dramatic decline in the trout population.

Duck migrations from up north are also being affected. As the climate warms, fewer and fewer migratory ducks are flying south for the winter.

A Dangerous Future

Pollution is accumulating in our atmosphere and increasing the Earth’s temperature. Globally, that means more intense hurricanes, rising sea levels, and potentially catastrophic changes to our weather in the years ahead. In South Carolina, everyone will feel the effects of global warming.

Opportunities for Farmers

To limit the pollution that comes from fossil fuels and causes climate change, the world needs to rely on alternative fuels like ethanol. South Carolina farmers could also see an increase in the demand for crops that are used to produce bio-fuels and electricity.

New Jobs

If we take national action to solve climate change, companies will have an incentive to invest in more energy efficient technologies. These technologies could be designed and manufactured right here in South Carolina, bringing high-tech, high-wage jobs to the state.
